What it actually means
The engineering of systems that monitor their own condition, detect degradation, and predict remaining useful life — the sensing, data, and algorithms that make condition-based maintenance possible. The prognostic leap (predicting failure before it happens) is the hard, valuable part; most fielded "PHM" is still diagnostics.
