SIL

Systems Integration Laboratory

What it actually means

The facility where a system's components — real hardware, real software, simulated environment — are integrated and tested together before the field or flight article exists. The SIL is where interface errors are supposed to die. In functional-safety contexts the same letters mean Safety Integrity Level, an entirely different concept from IEC 61508.

Where you'll meet it

Integration phases of avionics, vehicle, and combat system programs.
